Honey Bee Rescue - Another Part of our Mission

Honey Bee Tree Rescue

I got a call from the local power authority that they cut down a tree that was too close to the power lines and it had a colony of honey bees that would surely die if they could not be rescued.

I keep all my rescue tools handy especially during the swarming season just in case I get a call or text like this one.  I used my chain saw to "gently" cut along both sides of the area in the tree where the colony was established.  Fortunately I use chain saws quite a bit and I have a feel for how deep they are cutting and if I need to back off or keep moving.

This particular rescue mission took about 5 hour total from the time I left my house until I returned and put them into their new home safe and sound.  You can also watch the video on my Youtube channel.

If you have honey bees in your yard on a bush or limb or in a structure that need removal please contact us.  If I can't come out personally I have a list of honey bee heroes that I can reach out to that may be able to help.

This tree was massive

After cutting away a section of the tree, I found the colony living as they naturally want to live - inside a cozy dark tree with no disturbance until the power company arrived of course.

Dumping bees onto a tarp

I use a special bee vacuum made with 5 gallon buckets and suck them out of the tree into the bucket and then simply dump them in front of the box I want them to go in. It really works well.

Majority Rules!

One the majority of the bees are on the new box and in front - they start to march inside the opening. A little lemon grass oil on the front of the hive is a smell bees love and are naturally attracted to. It's always helpful if you catch the queen and place her inside too.

A Look Inside

Most of the wax I removed was white in color which means it was fresh and the bees did not live here very long. The longer bees live in the same cavity the darker the wax becomes.

Save the Queen

It's always a plus when you see the queen and are able to keep her safe inside this queen cage called a "hair clip". You can work at your leisure after you have her safe and the bees will go wherever she goes. Whenever I find her, I just place her inside the hive and in go the rest of the bees.

Let's Take a Selfie

I always like to take a selfie after a successful rescue mission with the bees. Here they are entering into their forever home.
